The four Navaratri Celebrations
In our Sanatan Dharma, we celebrate four Navaratris in a year. Chaitra Navaratri or Vasant Navaratri, Ashadh Gupt Navaratri, Sharadiya Navaratri and Magh Gupt Navratri. During these Navaratris, the energies of the Goddess will become closely available for the devotees in the universe. By performing Upasana and Homas in this period, we will become receptive to the energies and can receive them for our ultimate benefit.
The festival of Gupta Navaratri is said to bring good luck, prosperity, and protection to those who participate. It is said that, we will easily overcome land disputes, legal issues, family problems, business obstacles and find ways to deal with business adversaries. She gives fortune in the form of Bhoomi (land, property, agriculture, etc.). The Goddess saves you from health issues and protects you always.
Devotees of Varahi often fast during the festival, and they may also perform special Japas, Pujas and Rituals. It is also a time for spiritual growth and purification.
Who is Varahi Devi?
Sri Varahi is also called Dandini a Commander of forces to Goddess Chandika or Durga and part of Dasha Maha Vidyas or Sri Vidya. Varahi is said to reside in 16th Prakaram of the divine Sri Chakram. Varahi is one of Shakti deities known as Sapta Matrikas. They are: Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Vaarahi, Mahendri and Chamundi.
Varahi is also known as Dhumra Varahi or Dhumravati. Varahi represents Lord Yama’s energy. She is said to have been created out of the boar form of Lord Vishnu. She is also called Panchami as her name occurs in the fifth position of Saptamatrikas. Varahi is described in the Matsya Purana and agamas like Purva-karana and Rupamandana.
Markandeya Purana praises Varahi as a granter of boons and the regent of the Northern direction, in a hymn where the Matrikas are declared as the protectors of the directions.
