Bright fortnight of Ashvayujamaas beginning from 22nd September, 2025 is a very colorful festival season all over India. These fifteen days of the beginning of Sharadrutu are celebrated with various regional flavour. As the crops near the season of harvesting during Sharadrutu, all the devout Hindus, celebrate this season with a lot of Puja-Vrat, Havan-Homas and festivals. Dusshera or Dasara, Navaratri or Sharannavaratri, Garba Dandiya, Durga Pujo, Kullu-Dussera, Ram Leela, the different names to the Navaratri festivals are many. Devi Mahatmyam Importance during Navaratri

Devi Mahatmyam, in verse-form taken from Markandeya Puranam, describes the Nine Avatars (forms) Goddess Shakti assumes, to give Moksha to the demon kings like Chand-Munda, Madhu-Kaitabha, Mahishasur, Raktabeejasur, Shumbha-Nishumbha, and many others. Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda (Kooshmanda), Skandamata, Katyayini, Kaalaratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri are the forms taken by the Goddess Mother Nature. These sacred verses of Devi Mahatmyam from the Vedic times are chanted on all the nine days with the offerings of Naivedyam or Bhog. Chandi Yaag or Nava Durga Homam are prominently performed Havan or Homa Vidhis during Navaratri. Also chanted are Stotrams like Lalita Sahasranamam, Lalita Trishati dedicated to mother Goddess. Kumari Pujas are the Pujas offered to young girls within the age group of eight years. Different days of Sharannavaratri beginning from Pratipada of Shukla Paksha are celebrated with Vrat-Pujas like Kalash-Sthapan, Gauri-Gaja-Ashva Puja, Lalita Panchami, Durga Ashtami, Mahar Navami and ending with Vijaya Dashami.

Sharannavaratri Celebrations 2025 on the Nine Days

Many even undertake Sankalpam to perform Havans, Homas and Yaag dedicated to Goddess Shakti or Durga. Sarasvati Avahan is performed on the day coinciding with Moola Nakshatram. Ayudha Pooja is performed seeking the benevolence of Ayudha Lakshmi in the Business/Work places. Shami Puja on Vijaya Dashami day is another auspicious occasion in memory of Pandavas, Seemollanghan Puja is celebrated in memory of the successful mission of Hanuman in the Swarnalanka. Sri Rama Pattabhishekam forms a very important part of the Vijaya Dashami Celebrations all over India. Not just these, every village, town and city will be in full décor during Navaratri Celebrations. Many kinds of Utsav are offered to the Gods and Goddesses all over. The fifteen day celebrations are complete with Kojagar Lakshmi Puja on the occasion of Ashvayuj Purnima.

Lalita Panchami during Navaratri

Panchami Thithi of Sharadiya Navaratri is associated with Upanga Lalita Vrat. Many keep a fast on this day, dedicated to Mother Goddess seeking knowledge, wealth and happiness. On this auspicious day Lalitha appeared to defeat the demon Bhandasura created from Kamadeva’s ashes.  Also chanted are Stotrams like Lalita Sahasranamam, Lalita Trishati during Lalita Panchamee.

Saraswati Avahan Puja

Saraswati Puja is celebrated on the day of Moola Nakshatram in the Shukla Paksha during Navaratri seeking her benevolence in enlightening us. If we are unable to perform Kalasha Pooja and Pattada bombe Pooja on Padyami of Navaratri, this is another opportunity to perform these Pujas. Hence, the day of Moola Nakshatra and Saraswati Puja has gained importance.

Durgashtami in Sharannavaratri

Durgashtami is the day on which Kali who appeared from Goddess Durga, annihilated Mahishasur as well as Chanda-Munda. Durgashtami is also known as Veerashtami or Durgotsav.

Ayudha Puja on Maha Navami

Ayudha Puja is performed on the day with Navami Thithi. This is also known as Maha Navamee. While the Ayudha Puja got the significance, when Prince Arjun offered the Pujas to the weapons they had hidden in the Shimshupa tree, before taking on Kaurava princes who waged a campaign during Pandava Ajjnatavaas.

Vijaya Dashami

Navaratri Celebrations culminate on the day of Vijaya Dashami. After the victory against the demons, all the Gods and Goddesses celebrated on Vijaya Dashami. Lord Sriram succeeded in overcoming the demon Ravan on this day. Ramalila is a major celebration in the northern parts of India.

Dasara Dolls

Also the celebration of Sharadiya Navaratri or Dasara can be inseparable from the arrangement of dolls. The arrangement of Dasara dolls has many regional names. Gombe Habba in the old Mysuru region, Golu/Bommai Kolu festival in the Tamil Nadu, Bommala Koluvu in the Telugu speaking region of Andhra-Telangana are some of these.

Naada Habba Traditions in Karnataka during Sharannavaratri Celebrations

The city of palaces Mysuru is decked up for Sharannavaratri Celebrationsshowpiece event. In Mysuru, Dasara marks the slaying of demon Mahishasura by Goddess Chamundeshwari and symbolises the triumph of good over evil. Jumbo Savari or Jamboo Savari, a tradition begun by the emperors of Vijayanagar Samrajya continued in the erstwhile Mysore State. With the formation of Karnataka State, this has become an inseparable part of Naada Habba traditions.
