ಮಾಘಸ್ನಾನವೆಂಬುದು ಭಾರತೀಯ ಪಂಚಾಂಗರೀತ್ಯಾ ಮಾಘಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಪವಿತ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಜಲ-ತೀರ್ಥಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡುವ ಸ್ನಾನ-ವ್ರತ. ಮುಕ್ಕೋಟಿ ದೇವತೆಗಳೂ (ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ವಿಷ್ಣು, ಮಹೇಶ, ಆದಿತ್ಯ ಮತ್ತಿತರ ಎಲ್ಲ ದೇವತೆಗಳು) ಮಾಘ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಪುರಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಿದೆ. ಮಾಘಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡೀ ಭೂಮಂಡಲವು ಪವಿತ್ರವಾಗಿರುವುದೆಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ.ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಾನ ಪಂಚಾಗದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಚೈತ್ರಮಾಸದಿಂದ ಪಾಲ್ಗುನಮಾಸದವರೆವಿಗಿರುವ ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಮಾಸಕ್ಕೂ ತನ್ನದೇ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಮಾಘಮಾಸದ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟತೆ ಎಲ್ಲಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಭಿನ್ನವಾದುದು ಕಾರ್ತಿಕಮಾಸದ ದೀಪಾರಾಧನೆಗೆ ಇರುವಷ್ಟೇ ಪ್ರಾಶಸ್ತ್ಯವು ಮಾಘಮಾಸದ ಸ್ನಾನ-ದಾನಗಳಿಗಿವೆ. ನದೀ-ಸರೋವರ-ಸಮುದ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನಮಾಡಿ ಪಾಪಕ್ಷಯಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಮಾಘಸ್ನಾನದ ಗುರಿ.ಧರ್ಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಮಹತ್ತರವಾದ ಫಲಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಘಸ್ನಾನವನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಅನುಸರಿಸಿ ಪುಣ್ಯ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸುವ ಸುಲಭಮಾರ್ಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮಕರರಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವಾಗ ಮಾಘಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾತಃ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಸಮಸ್ತ ಪಾಪಗಳಿಂದ ಮುಕ್ತರಾಗಿ ಅಂತ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಕ್ಷವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ಈ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ತೀರ್ಥರಾಜ ಎಂದೇ
Arudra Nakshatra Darisanam or Ardra Nakshatra Darshan is a very ancient festival performed in the Pacha Maha Sabha Temples of Lord Shiva in Tamil Nadu. This is also called Thiruvadirai.

The entry of Sun into Dhanur Rashi (Sagittarius), which happens in the middle of December, is denoted as DhanuH Sankramana, a period of special significance and positive energy. Pradosha Puja is the worship offered to Lord Shiva in the twilight zone on the day of Trayodashi Thithi (13th day of the Hindu Panchangam) that occurs twice every month, seeking his benevolence and grace. Libations are offered to the Shivalingam with different Dravyas (materials like curd, ghee, milk, coconut water and so on) chanting Sri Rudram.
