The Navamee (ninth day) of the Shukla Paksha (Bright fortnight) of Chaitramaas in the Hindu Santan calendar is of a great significance. This marks the birth of Lord Ram who was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Treta Yug. Ram was born to King Dasharath and Kaushalya in Ayodhya. This is a day for celebration to the Hindu devotees. Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, the French politician, lawyer and connoisseur wrote in 1826, “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es – Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” In other words, you are what you eat.

But in ancient times this was better understood than in today’s world.

In Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Sri Krishna says that all food is divided into three groups.  Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic. Wisdom verily arises out of ‘Sattva Guna’, the mode of goodness. Whereas greed and lust are the byproducts of ‘Rajo Guna’, the mode of passion and lethargy. Ignorance is produced by 'Tamo Guna'.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was the famous ascetic of Dakshineshwar in the undivided Bengal of the yesteryears. He was born on Dwiteeya day (Second day after New Moon) of Phalgunmaas in 1836.

Birth of Sri Ramakrishna:

Ramakrishna was born as Gadadhar Chattopadhyay to Khudiram Chattopadhyay and Chandramani Devi. The family was devoted to Lord Rama. Khudiram and Chandramani named their boys after Lord Ram as: Ramkumar, Rameswar, and Ramakrishna (Gadadhar). Katyayini and Sarvamangala were the names given to the girls born to the Khudiram couple.

"I was a pet child of my father. He used to call me Ramakrishnababu."

This was stated by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa himself, which finds a mention in the book of Sri Mahendranath Gupta.

Amavaasya (No Moonday) of Pushyamaas occurring on 21, January 2023 is notable for the Aradhana of Sri Purandara Dasaru. Purandaradasa was a great literary figure in the Bhakti movement. Yekadashi (Or the eleventh day) occurring in the bright fortnight of Magashiramaas (Tamil: Margazhi) is more popular as Vaikuntha Yekadashi. This is also known as Mokshada Yekadashi. Margashiramaas is known as Dhanurmaas in the solar calendar and is the last month in Dakshinayana.
