Moksha Narayanabali Puja is described in the Garuda Purana. Out of the two main contents of the Garuda Purana, Purvakanda and Pretakanda, the Narayana Bali Puja rites are mentioned in the Pretakanda content.

The Narayan Bali Puja is believed to help a person get rid of ancestral curses, also known as Pitru Dosha.

Narayana Bali Puja Vidhi | Puja Procedure

Narayanabali Puja Vidhi is similar to that of the procedures followed in a funeral, wherein an artificial human body made out of wheat flour is used. Mantras chanted during the puja invokes the remaining desires of the departed souls. It is believed the ritual allows them to possess the artificial body and the funeral liberates them to the other world. The Nag Bali Puja helps the souls get rid of their sins. For Nag Bali Puja, a snake made out of wheat dough is used.

When a person’s death occurs due to unnatural causes, the Atma (soul) is stuck between the two worlds. In such event, the soul puts the surviving family members through a lot of sufferings to seek their attention. This can result in problems like Preta-Badha, loss in business, increasing debt, Family health Problems, marriage problems, accidental deaths, loss of peace and harmony. When no efforts are made to provide salvation to such dissatisfied Atma (Soul), they curse the surviving generation or their kin. This is known as Pitra Shaap or Preta Shaap.

It is said that however we appease gods, before showering us with benevolence, they are said to inquire with Pitrus, if they have been satisfied. Hence, it is important to seek the virtue of Pitrus.

Where is Gaya?

Gaya Kshetra is one of the popular Mukti Sthalas in India. Gaya Punya Kshetra on the banks of Phalgu River is the sought after place for performing Pujas and rituals related to ancestors. Devotees from all over visit Gaya Kshetra to perform rites like Atma Pinda Dan, Gaya Shraddha and Preta Shraddha, Moksha Narayanabali or Vishnubali, Tripindi Shraddha seeking salvation. Gaya Kshetra is located in the state of Bihar about 100km from its capital Patna which was known as Pataliputra in historic days. Gaya is one of the three places mentioned in the shastras as being best for Pitru karyas. The other two are Kashi and Prayag (Also called Teertharaja).

Generally once in a year every banyan tree releases all its leaves, but it is said that, Akshayavat tree does not release its leaves at all. This Batavriksha remains evergreen, even during draught-like conditions. It is said that the tree has existed since Treta Yug when Sita gave a boon that the tree would remain immortal. It is located in the courtyard of Vishnupad temple.

Prethashila

Prethashila, the hill of the Pretas(dissatisfied spirits) is lying at a distance of about 8km to from Vishnupada temple. This is another place, where the sacred rites are required to be performed first before even visiting the temple. It is mentioned in Vyasa Mahabharat, that performing rituals at Pretashila neutralizes the sins of even Brahmahatya dosh. Vayu Purana mentions that we have to offer Pindas to ancestors on its summit, take a holy bath in the Brahma Kunda at the foot of the hill and offer its water to the Gods and Pitru Devatas. Lord Brahma had performed Ashwamedha Yaag at this place.

Gokarna Kshetra is a beach-town in the confluence of rivers Gangavalli and Aghanashini in the Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka State. Gokarna also known as the Bhu-Kailasa, Dakshin Kashi (Kashi of South) and Rudrapada-Gaya of India.
